A-Cats in the Mall

E-mail Print PDF

Quite often it is very difficult for a sailing club to grow in numbers due to the secluded locations which give them so much character. West river sailing club, located in peaceful Galesville, is far from busy Annapolis harbor where the public often see sailboats while walking the city dock area shopping. Galesville while peaceful offers some of the bays best sailing but hardly has the traffic to bring in new members into the club and have a big impact on sailing community.

The USA Brings it Best to the Home Field

With a record setting 100 boats pre-registered, the 2007 A-Class World Championship sponsored by Ronstan, FSE Robline, Corum, and West Marine is now only weeks away. The regatta will take place at The Islander resort hotel in Islamorada, FL. The Islander has been hosting the US A-Class for its last two midwinter race weeks and was the unanimous choice by the US class as the best venue to host this world championship.  The race site is a 9 square area of the Atlantic ocean protected by an offshore reef. Sailors will enjoy clear aqua water and hopefully warm and consistent easterly winds of 8-15 knots.

The international contingent includes Glenn Ashby from Australia who will be racing to defend his 2006 title. Glenn is a multiple world champion in the class and is regarded as the best A-Class sailor ever. In addition, Glenn is regarded as a favorite to medal in the 2008 Tornado Olympic event in Qingdao, China with his teammate Darren Bundock. In addition to Ashby,

A sordid tale of Addiction

E-mail Print PDF

My name is lincoln rowley, and I am an A-cat addict. There I said it. The first step to recovery is to admit there is a problem – and I have a problem.
It all started out so simply. One day I was sitting on the rail with 12 or 15 of my crewmates footing off toward a 3 degree header at about 6.7453 knots and feeling really good about how my extra hard hiking was eeking out almost a hundredth of a knot above target. I was looking back for an update on the continued screaming in the back of the boat, when I saw something flash by out of the corner of my eye. I had no idea what it was. I thought for a second that some kind of plane was crashing, but when I looked closer there was a guy standing on the side of it. He was suspended there, and it took a little while to see that there was some kind of fishing line or something tied to his x oh my god! How is that possible! It sailed past, higher and much faster, and then bore away across our bow. The guy jumped in off the wire, to the low side, with a hull in the air, and doubled his speed as he disappeared behind our genoa. The last thing I saw was the sun reflecting off his x teeth.

First Ride on an A-Cat

E-mail Print PDF

And I do mean ride, these things are more fun than the roller coaster at the fair. Between crazy work schedules and crewing commitments at regattas this was the first weekend I was able to make it down to my parents and try out the A-Cat. We had good wind, blowing 10-15 out of the West with pretty flat seas. We got the cats (a 2002 and a 2001 BIM) out on the beach and rigged them up. My brother-in-law and I got familiar with the rigging before we went out. This was my first time on a uni-rig since I sailed Lasers when I was a kid.
