First Annual A-Class Catamaran Jersey Shore Regatta

E-mail Print PDF

Jersey Shore RegattaLavallette Yacht Club

It was a hot and windy day for the first annual A-Class Catamaran Jersey Shore Regatta, which was held at Lavallette Yacht Club on on Saturday, July 24th. Eight sailors from Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club made the trip 'down the shore' to sail in Barnegat Bay, known for its wind and open waters. Sailors started off their day with a made-to-order hot breakfast at the yacht club. Not only did they get to eat in air conditioned comfort, but they had the unusual opportunity to have a generous meal at a modest price; no meal cost more than $3.00. Peter Block was so busy enjoying his giant cheese omelet (he was in omelet heaven) that Angela Burdette had to come to his rescue with napkins in hand to wipe his chin.

Diamond Invitational A-class Regatta

E-mail Print PDF

Gulfport FL June 6-8, 2010

This was an Invitational event in honor of our oldest salt, Gordon Isco. Gordon has seen many regattas in the Midwest and Florida, and competed in innumerable events including Hobie 18 and 20s Nationals and Worlds. After retiring from his welding business to the Sunny South, Gordon served U.S. Sailing for many years as the Multihull representative. He opted for an A-class future 10 years ago. Last year Gordon decided to make an age statement, or perhaps a non-age statement, and invited A-cat racers for his 75th Birthday race event at his home club, the small but very active Gulfport Yacht Club. At his suggestion, the entry fee for the Diamond Regatta was a one bottle of aged Rum, or a bottle of fine wine. Invitations collected 14 Florida sailors including Bob Curry from many miles away in the Panhandle, plus Mike Krantz from Georgia and Mike Gramont

Merrill "Doc" Stern Celebrated in Sailing Race

E-mail Print PDF

As the horn signaled the start of the first race, the sailors fastened their trapeze harnesses, sheeted in their sails, and began to steer their boats to windward in preparation for a typical catamaran race on Lake Hopatcong. However, this was not a typical catamaran race. This past Saturday, June 19th, 18 A-Class Catamarans, with balloons flying from their sails, had jammed the starting area to race in the "Doc Stern Regatta," celebrating and honoring fellow sailor Merrill "Doc" Stern's 90th birthday.

Virginia Beach - Sail-the-Bay

E-mail Print PDF

Sail-in-the-BayA-cats converged on Virginia Beach for the annual Sail-the-Bay regatta on May 22/23, including those traveling from West River Sailing Club and as far as Tennessee (always good to see you Joe!). Local Hobie Fleet 32 was gracious enough to allow us to crash their party. In return, regatta management expertise, in the form of A.J. Picillo and Brendan Drinkwater, were stong-armed into orchestrating the on-the-water festivities as co-PRO's.

Fleets included the A-cats, Open, Hobie single and double handed classes.
Several A's arrived early on Friday to get familiar with the condition, their patience was rewarded when the cloud cover burnt away leaving a sunny day with 8-10knots of breeze.
